Bland & Sorkin have over 35 years of combined experience providing a broad range of business legal services to a diverse clientele in Virginia and throughout the United States. Our practice concentrates in the areas of insurance, business and healthcare law. We have considerable experience counseling insurance companies including, reciprocals, exchanges, mutuals, risk retention groups, risk purchasing groups, captives, group self-insurance associations, self-insurance trusts, insurance services and insurance management organizations, and other insurance and alternative risk transfer mechanisms, throughout the United States. We also have considerable experience in the organization, capitalization, and operation of reciprocal and exchange insurance companies, and the reorganization of mutual and stock insurance companies. We use our experience and innovation to assist clients with tax-efficient risk financing solutions. We handle capitalization, organization, tax, licensing, state registration requirements, agent licensing, reinsurance, regulatory matters, corporate governance, policies and endorsements, coverage matters, mergers, acquisitions, financings, and other ongoing operational and transactional issues and matters for our insurance clients.

Our firm also has experience representing a variety of other businesses and professionals. We handle all start-up and on-going corporate, transactional, and regulatory matters for our clients, including traditional and capital financings, buy-sell agreements, mergers and acquisitions, business sales, intellectual property, including trademark and copyright, policy and employment matters, including non-competition agreements, real estate, and tax.

About the Principals

Richard W.E. Bland is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Richmond and a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law. He is a vice-chair of the American Bar Association’s Insurance Regulation Section and a member of the American Health Lawyers Association, the Richmond Bar Association, and the Virginia State Bar. He has received an AV® Preeminent™ rating from Martindale-Hubbell. This rating demonstrates that a lawyer has earned the highest rating available for their legal ability and professional ethics.

Scott J. Sorkin received his Bachelor of Arts in political science from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and graduated cum laude from the University of Richmond’s T.C. Williams School of Law. He is a member of the Virginia State Bar and the Virginia State Bar’s Business Law, Health Law, Real Property, and Intellectual Property sections. He has received an AV® Preeminent™ rating from Martindale-Hubbell. This rating demonstrates that a lawyer has earned the highest rating available for their legal ability and professional ethics.
